In 1887 Lizzie and Tom Sykes fulfilled their dream of trekking in Kashmir (or Cashmere as Lizzie refers to it). At the time they were living in Lucknow, India, where for thirty years Tom was the Principal of La Martiniere College - on which Rudyard Kipling based Kim's school. Then in their mid-forties they set off from Murree with nine hundredweight of luggage at the start of their trek, staying for a while in Srinagar and the surrounding area, before crossing the mountainous Pir Panjal Pass on their journey home to Lucknow three months later - an extraordinary and fascinating trip.
Lizzie scrupulously recorded their remarkable and, at times, dangerous journey in a diary. She describes vividly the scenery, the flowers and the trees that they encountered on their almost five hundred mile trek on foot and on horseback, with a wry sense of humour that finds amusement even in the most dire situations. Staying in primitive and often filthy rest-houses en route, Lizzie and Tom display fortitude and initiative throughout.
This diary, of a journey undertaken in a forgotten era, is greatly enhanced by original pencil sketches of some of the places they visited, produced by Lizzie during this trip. The diary came to light through her great-granddaughter, Judith, and has been meticulously and adroitly edited by her husband, Patrick Pinches.

This is a fantastic memoir that you just can't miss. I was astounded by the adventures of Tom and Liz Sykes during their 1887 trek through Kashmir (Cashmere). Liz's wit, humor, and indomitable spirit spring out of the pages. Although this was written nearly 125 years ago, her voice rings clear and true. Liz and her husband would be called "eco-tourists" these days, but the dangers they faced in 1887 due to perilous river crossings, stubborn mules, and questionable lodgings were part and parcel of the whole experience. Liz was a confident Mem Sahib, without a cowardly bone in her body. I truly gasped in amazement at some of her adventures, and envied her composure as she trusted her life to the horse which she happened to be riding that day. It is up to the reader to discern whether Liz and Tom found their Shangri-la. Nature's beauty provided strength and sustenance to their weary bodies, but the privations they experienced were probably more than most people these days could have handled. Liz's sketchbook provides a glimpse into a land forgotten by time. I only wish that I could have made the drawings large on my Kindle. If you enjoy adventure, excitement, and travel stories--this is one of the best!Product details
