Interesting period read. Very judgmental. Very class conscious in a way we Westerners have never really understood, even going back a couple of generations. Good happy ending. Good glimpse of the more's and living strictures of the era.
I know this is an older book, but I think we all need to read it. The title says it all. Stanley's "experiment" might have been a little selfish, but what a lesson everyone, even Stanley, learned. It made me think. A lot. And I do believe I saw a bit of myself there. This one is a keeper.
The plot was entertaining and thoughtful. What would three different families do if they suddenly became rich? Though written nearly one hundred years ago, this novel is germaine to our current entitlement culture. The characters were well developed, sympathetic and realistic. I found myself wishing Disney would make a movie out of this family friendly book. I read it in one weekend and totally enjoyed myself.
I finally read this book which I bought almost a year ago and It was hard to put down but when I was almost done I didn't want it to end. Wish there was a sequel. Many surprises as the story moves along and so much truth about what money can do to a person's thinking and personality. It was recommended by grandchildren girls 15 and 10, boy 11.
Although this book was written in 1918, it holds true for today Unless used wisely, money will not make you happy! This is a funny, enjoyable read for the whole family. I love Eleanor Porter and this was a book that I was unaware of. I got it on my kindle, but am now purchasing it in hardback for my 'keeper' library. It is a book that I know that I will re-read (and loan to my friends).
I LOVE this book! Got it free for my kindle because I love some other things from this author. I was really surprised by how applicable it is for today. What do you do with what you have? What would really make one happy? An entire change of lifestyle? Maybe not. Keeping up with someone else? Maybe. Saving every little dime? Hmmmm.... It makes one rethink what you would do with some money windfall like the lottery or an inheritance. And makes me want to do better with my money. I will be having my children who are homeschooled read this as an opener to our finances class. It is OLDFASHIONED, and the free version has some editing errors. That aside, I thought it was grand. One more title to adore from this author!
I really enjoyed this book. It starts with an interesting premise of a multi-millionaire concerned about what will happen to his fortune when he dies. As a bachelor, he doesn't have a wife, and he doesn't have any close relatives he actually knows. So he decides to secretly give a million dollars each to his closest relatives and observe what the money does to them without them knowing they're being watched.
The characters are well-developed before they receive the money, so there aren't many surprises about how they act once they get the money, but it's an enjoyable read and offers a lot of ideas worth pondering.
